Description

This medical illustration produced for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) features the novel shear-thinning micro-gel implant designed to occlude the left atrial appendage (LAA). The trans-septal catheter delivers blue, radiopaque micro-gels into a collagen “sock” within the LAA. The micro-gel’s rheology changes from fluid under shear to a jammed solid, forming a soft scaffold that matches the LAA’s anatomy. The scaffold then plugs the ostium completely and becomes overgrown with native tissue, eliminating the need for anticoagulants. Designed for AFib patients who cannot tolerate blood thinners, this innovation solves the clinical risks of existing nitinol plug systems. The animation combines molecular rheology with cardiac intervention visuals to educate clinicians and innovators alike.
